RECITING MANTRAS:
PRACTICE AND BENEFITS

images chanting japaThe word mantra is composed of the two terms “man” and “tra” that together form its meaning. In summary, it could be translated as “an instrument to alter thought.” Every sanskrit syllable has, however, more than one meaning and this is why it is worth further exploration to deepen our understanding of the meaning of the word mantra.

The syllable ‘man’ means “mind, thought, act of thinking, intellect, breath, living soul” while the syllable ‘tra’ means “that liberates, that accomplishes, that acts and that protects.”

However the two syllables together mean “formula that clears the mind”, or “practice that protects thinking”, or “formula that acts on thought”, etc. So in short a mantra is a sequence of words which, repeated with the correct pronunciation and the right mental attitude, can give more power to our minds and create tangible effects in our lives.

RECITING OF MANTRAS CALMS THE AGITATED MIND AND IS THEREFORE A POWERFUL TRANQUILLIZER, IT INDUCES SERENITY, PEACEFULNESS AND RELAXATION

The best way to recite the mantra is to sit in the yoga pose with legs crossed or in any other comfortable position, the back straight but relaxed, both hands in jnana mudra (the gesture of knowledge) resting on the knees, or you can hold a japamala, the rosary of 108 beads used by Indian yogis, in your right hand. Ideally the mantra should be chanted at least 108 times (the sacred number) or more.

Essential, esoteric and powerful, mantras are able to evoke divine forces, to demonstrate and to dispel. They are the sound essence of being, verbally expressed out loud, or recited mentally, subtly evoked in an almost imperceptible murmur under the breath, fully understood in the interior silence.
Secret name of the gods and their invisible presence, vibration of the primordial elements, latent power in the body and psyche, spiritual talisman given by the guru to the disciple in the initiation ceremony, the mantra is an essential instrument in the discipline of yoga.
Gabriella Cella Al Chamali, Kriya Yoga)

There are many mantras that you can choose from for your meditation, here I will quote just some of the most famous and well-known:

For sure the most known mantra which anyhow has got part of our collective knowledge, the matra of the beginning, of the creation is OM, easy to chant, and the scriptures say that all mantras in the end melt into this sacred syllable.

The buddhist mantra: OM MANI PADME HUM
may the jewel of the lotus light up in my heart

The shaivite mantra: OM NAMO SHIVAYA
I offer my respects to the merciful Lord Shiva

S1020004_convertedThe Vaishnava Mahamantra:
HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA
KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE
HARE RAMA HARE RAMA
RAMA RAMA HARE HARE

This mantra invokes Lord Krishna (the all-attractive), Lord Rama (manifestation of the ideal ruler and the inexhaustible source of all joy and all opulence) and the energy, the emanation of infinite love, Hare or Radhe, inseparable from the Lord.

Try it to believe it, mantra meditation, in any case, will bring you numerous benefits.

By reading my thesis you will learn four yoga sequences - I created one sequence for each element: earth, water, fire and air. I called my thesis "The Feminine Dance", because I perceive life as a dance, sometimes frenetic, sometimes slow, sometimes serene and so on. I hope you enjoy the magical world of Yoga Ratna!
